Jeune vietnamienne aux fleurs de lotus – Vietnamese girl with lotus
Circa 1925-30
76×51 cm
Formerly belonging to the Collection of Mr Portal Albert (1881-1961), printer and publisher in Saigon.
Organized an exhibition for Alix de Fautereau at the Portal bookstore in 1928.
Estimate: 70,000 – 90,000 euros
The nude in Alix’s painting is a very feminine, very fertile image, imbued with Vietnamese feminine, and somewhat wild. For example, the character in the painting Nude with a fan reminds us of the Tahitian women of the 19th century French artist, Paul Gauguin. Nude Vietnamese girl sitting with confident with a typical Vietnamese paper fan in her hand. Outside the window are flowers and bright yellow sunlight. The Asian tradition of reticence has been replaced by boldness as a changed concept.
Some of the models in Alix’s nude paintings probably among those who worked in her household. They often appear in her paintings as rural girls with healthy, sturdy looks, brown skin, and rustic features that are still pristine.
Alix was very successful when using outdoor motifs such as flowers and leaves as decorative details along with nude characters. If we are used to seeing Lady with lilies of Tô Ngọc Vân or Lady with lotus of Nguyễn Sáng, we will surely be very interested in Alix’s Vietnamese girl with lotus.
The character in Vietnamese girl with lotus here is clearly a teenage girl, still very shy. She was topless, sitting thoughtfully next to white lotus still in a bunch of leaves.
Although the starting price is quite high, Viet Art View believes that Alix Aymé’s Vietnamese girl with lotus will be purchased by some art collector at a good price.
