According to a grandchild who is very close to the artist, this pastel still life painting of a baby’s breath flowervase was created by artist Tran Duy in just one night.
It was on a February day, 2001; beautiful early spring day; birthday of a dear friend. The friend had spent nearly 10 years beside him, talking and taking care of painter Tran Duy in his mental life.
It was the birthday of his friend, but that lovely friend bought a bouquet of white baby’s breath, and a crimson rose, brought to painter Tran Duy’s house. The bouquet of white baby’s breath was placed in a clear glass vase. The flowervase looked very beautiful, but he didn’t seem to have paid much attention at that time…
After a warm, happy and emotional birthday dinner, everyone went home…
He went to bed, then suddenly woke up in the middle of the night, feeling a little missing, probably due to the influence of some wine drunk at dinner. Looking at the clock, it was past midnight. The lights in the room were still on, illuminating a warm, gentle light at the vase of white baby’s breath on the table. What a beauty, an extreme beauty. Emotion surged. He jumped up, hurriedly looking for things to paint, to capture this beautiful moment. The large, nice paperboard was found very quickly. He got a pastel box that was always available, being engrossed, his hand moved in the flow of emotions.
A flower still life with a very dark purple-blue color – the color of night, highlight the tiny white dots of baby’s breath with strong strokes of thin interwoven branches… done, in just one night.
