On March 17, 2023, in an auction house – there were many of Vietnamese paintings. In lot 184, is the silk painting signed CONG THANH, dated 82 (1982), silk, 39.5×54 cm, starting price 300-500 EUR, sold at 320 EUR, a price could not be better for the buyer. Congratulations to the buyer for having a broad background knowledge.

Because CONG THANH is the signature of painter Phạm Công Thành (1932-2022), a famous professor – painter – exemplary teacher for many generations of students in Vietnam University of Fine Arts. He is the author of the famous book ‘The rules of perspective’ compiled in 1975, first published in 1982; then reprinted to 4, 5 times. This is a “bedside pillow” book for art students.

In fact, paintings by artist Phạm Công Thành do not have many transactions in the market (both domestic and international) because the family is very conscious of preserving. But people in the art world understand, the price of his paintings cannot be at that level. It may be 10, 20, 30 times (or x times) the price of 320 EUR. This price is based on the transaction for some of his silk paintings, not to mention the love of many people for his work and his reputation. He is considered one of the outstanding realist painters. He worked in a variety of materials, but the most are still oil, silk…

To have background knowledge of art, it is necessary to have time to study, learn, and encounter reality. Which artist from which period? Why famous? Why are paintings valuable? Seeing a painting in addition to being beautiful, if you understand why it is beautiful, why it is valuable… it will be much more wonderful.

Thus, collecting art brings many meanings. The owner of the work, in addition to the emotional enjoyment of the art, also preserves the cultural value, the historical value and along with it the commercial value.
