LÊ PHỔ (1907-2001)
“Peonies and poppies”, circa 1960-1970
Oil on silk mounted on wood

40 × 27 cm

On a pale grey background, a vibrant floral painting emerges: Peonies, poppies, roses and irises. The flowers all shine with freshness. Lê Phổ captured their sparkle on the canvas, bringing a surprising intensity. The contrast between colours and shapes creates a captivating rhythm in the composition, blending the solidity of the peonies with the softness of the poppies and irises. A delicate combination that gives the work a sense of peace and fragile beauty, making the whole both graceful and harmonious.

Lê Phổ was one of eight students of the first class of Indochina Fine Arts College (1925-1930). He was also one of the most outstanding representatives of Indochina Fine Arts. Lê Phổ had three periods of creation. The first period was the time he was in Hà Nội and a few years later when he was in France. The second period was the Romanet period, from about 1942 to 1964. The third period (the last period) was from 1964 when he signed an exclusive contract with Wally Findlay Galleries in the United States. From this point on, he almost only created in oil. This was the period of the strongest harmony between East and West in Lê Phổ’s paintings.

A still life of flowers is always a wise choice for spaces that need joy and warmth. Lê Phổ’s still life of flowers here is in the style of Western Impressionist painting. The lines and colors present thanks to the talent of a master, stimulating the viewer’s imagination of a space with light, floral scent, wind and sunshine. The red and orange spots along with the white areas complement each other, forming a harmonious overview.
