Mai Trung Thứ, “Grandmother”, 1976
Ink and color on silk, signed and dated upper right.
In original frame made by the artist

22 × 47 cm (lot 15)

As one of the artists from the Indochina Fine Arts College who is steadfast in his choice of the subject for his work, Mai Trung Thứ’s painting style has also changed over the years. The characters’ shape have been drawn with simpler lines since the 1950s, their faces have become rounder, and the backgrounds use neutral colors. These changes became stronger in the 1960s and were most clearly expressed in works created in the 1970s.

Painted in 1976, the work “Grandmother” is marked by the difference in the use of color. These years are the years of vivid and somewhat bright tones. Thus, pink, blue and orange bring playfulness to the composition, while the background painted with a gradient technique between blue and green helps highlight this vibrant color palette.
