Today, July 17, 2024, marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of painter Dương Bích Liên. Today is also the day to say goodbye to a person (of the same period) who had many connections with famous Vietnamese painters – Collector Nguyễn Bá Đạm (1922-2024).

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of painter Dương Bích Liên, Viet Art View would like to share a short story related to the transfer of the work The harvest has come which was created by painter Dương Bích Liên 1954.

Dương Bích Liên (1924-1988). The harvest has come. 1954. Oil. Việt Nam Fine Arts Museum
The image of the artwork was printed and published by Việt Nam National Printing House (around 1957-1958)

Decades ago, the family of Mr. T.V.H – the owner of the work The harvest has come by Dương Bích Liên intended to bring the painting to France, because his father had settled in France at that time and wanted to have Dương Bích Liên’s painting hanging in the house. According to the regulations at that time, to transfer a work of art abroad, it was required to have a permit from the authorities before being allowed to take the painting out of Việt Nam.

After that, the painting was taken away to get permission. The cultural agency saw the painting with the name of artist Dương Bích Liên, knowing that it was a valuable painting, they had “mobilization” with the owner’s family. After the discussion, the painting was given to Việt Nam Fine Arts Museum by the owner’s family.

The painting was delivered right at the cultural agency that requested the license. Ms. N.H.Y, a museum staff member, was assigned to receive the painting. She tied the painting to her bicycle and brought it to the museum.

And then the Fine Arts Museum has a great work of artist Dương Bích Liên on the theme of labor and building socialism created in the year the Capital was liberated.

(Mr. T.V.H’s family has a tradition of collecting works of art and owns many paintings by famous Vietnamese artists.)
