Born in Hà Nội in 1923, Trần Phúc Duyên was a major Vietnamese artist of the 20th century. Coming from a wealthy family, he studied at Indochina Fine Arts College and specialized in lacquer painting. He graduated in 1945. He moved to France in 1954 to study at the Fine Arts School, developing his reputation and career between East and West. The 2023 exhibition commemorating Trần Phúc Duyên’s centenary at Quang San Art Museum in Hồ Chí Minh City highlighted his important works in the crafting of folding screens. However, his talent in this field was recognized early in his career, when a folding screen painted by Trần Phúc Duyên was presented by the Vietnamese government to Pope Pius XII on the occasion of the Jubilee Year in 1950, thereby raising his public profile. Initially figurative and decorative, his art evolved towards minimalist abstraction, elevating Vietnamese lacquer to the rank of great art.
