“Now Vũ Cao Đàm is famous everywhere and he really deserves it; He is a pioneer, representing both the modern and traditional movements of Indochina painting in France. This reputation he did not seek to claim for himself: Honest and sincere in the manner of the primitivist painters, whom he especially admired, he slowly perfected his style, cultivated his sensitivity, found his own way of expression.”
In 1949, Vũ Cao Đàm settled in the South of France. He and his family moved to the Les Heures Claires villa near Saint-Paul-de-Vence, right next to the Matisse chapel and just a kilometer from Marc Chagall’s house, ‘La Colline’.
Away from Paris, his works took on a more natural color, certainly to meet the needs of a less sophisticated market than the Capital market. Although some of the landscapes were influenced by Southern light and French Renaissance painting, he continued to paint scenes reminiscent of Việt Nam.
