Music not only creates necessary distances for Nguyen Duc Toan’s painting from the fact, the reality, as well as the gap between experiment and subject (in other words, music helped him approach the “magical reality of the painter”) – but music also gave him an ability to “hear” color-image that not all painters have. His paintings have a lot of strange “voices” (voix), sometimes just being a little bit different is enough to become special.
He painted landscapes and still lifes with oil and gouache like Cantates, sometimes with one part, sometimes with many parts, with rich accompaniment layers. He painted landscapes with lacquer, paintings of young women on silk like composing Préludes, with melodious, fanciful notes, sometimes just like a sketch but still have a perfect effect; draw abstract or semi-abstract compositions, improvisation layouts are like composing Fuga songs, full of color patches, extremely flexible “escape-chasing” movement lines… Besides, Nguyen Duc Toan’s solid professional skills in painting are also worthy for him to show all he wants.
