In the mid-twentieth century, Nguyễn Hữu Hợp and his wife, Madame Nguyễn Nguyệt Nga, were an aristocratic couple with close relationships with the royal family, especially with Bảo Đại, the last king of Việt Nam. Since 1948, they lived simultaneously in France and Hà Nội. Participating in international intellectual and artistic circles, they met Vietnamese artists such as Mai Trung Thứ, Vũ Cao Đàm and Lê Thị Lựu and her husband Ngô Thế Tân. They were keen to support the careers of these artists and commissioned portraits that remain in the family collection today.
