Born in 1904 in Romans, Henri Mège was the son of the painter Isabelle Mège (1878-1966), and from a young age he was immersed in the world of painting. However, after completing his studies, he decided to join the army and set off for Indochina in 1931, where he was appointed as a knight to King Bảo Đại and later as commander of the royal bodyguards. Close to important figures such as King Bảo Đại and the young painter Mai Trung Thứ, Henri Mège married the young granddaughter of the last governor of Tonkin. After being detained in 1940 during the Japanese invasion, he became a professor at the Saigon Fine Arts School from 1950 to 1956. He then returned to Savoie, Chambéry, where he retired and died in 1984. His twenty-five-year stay in Indochina from 1931 to 1956 left an indelible mark on his work. Works such as “Landscape of An Nam” capture the peaceful beauty of the Indochinese landscapes. The everlasting memory of Asia permeated the works he made upon his return to France and his native Savoie.
