Nguyễn Phan Chánh, Young woman reading

Among the rare works above, there are works that were successfully auctioned at very good prices such as a silk painting by artist Trịnh Hữu Ngọc. With an estimate of 8 to 12 thousand euros, it later reached 203 thousand euros (including tax). At first, the painting did not have the artist’s name, but later, thanks to expert advice, the artist’s name was found. For the first time, a silk painting by artist Trịnh Hữu Ngọc has achieved such a record price.

Trịnh Hữu Ngọc, “Young Woman Dreamily Thinking of Her Loved One”

Not like Trịnh Hữu Ngọc’s silk painting, the silk painting Young woman reading by Nguyễn Phan Chánh only reached the equivalent of 160 thousand euros (including tax) for a rare original work of his that should have had high expectations in terms of price. The painting participated in the second exhibition of the Association for the Promotion of Art and Industry of An Nam (SADEAI), in Hà Nội, opening on December 3, 1936. And the lucky person to own this rare painting is a famous collector in Việt Nam. Congratulations on owning another rare work by Nguyễn Phan Chánh.

A very rare lacquer painting by Nguyễn Gia Trí created in 1940 also came to a collector in Hà Nội. The painting is in the process of completing procedures for repatriation in the expectation of its owner.

After the auction of the paintings by Nguyễn Phan Chánh and Nguyễn Gia Trí, a few collectors expressed regret that the two works had not achieved the right price as their intrinsic value. Perhaps, because the two paintings were auctioned at auction houses that do not regularly auction Vietnamese works of art. Therefore, the media effect is limited. This shows that the reputation of the auction organizer along with serious and methodical communication programs, meticulous and thorough historical research… are the prerequisites to be able to achieve a very good price for works of art.

OPTIMISTIC SIGNS
In an economic context that is still not recovering much; Although unstable and not really showing signs of optimism, the real estate, stock and gold markets are still the main investment channels that are interested. But through a few auctions, it can be seen that the art market, including antiques and works of art, is showing optimistic signs of liquidity as people interested in art are increasing. This is referenced from international auctions with the appearance of Vietnamese works of art.

In August 2024, Millon will hold another Paris – Hanoi duplex auction with valuable works. Let’s look forward to new colorful signals for the art market.
