On July 27, 1947, in Hùng Sơn commune, Đại Từ district, Thái Nguyên province, a meeting was held to discuss war invalids and martyrs and to implement President Hồ’s directive to choose one day as the day for Invalids. After considering, the conference agreed to make July 27, 1947 as the War Invalids And Martyrs Day of the country. Here, the organizers solemnly read a letter from President Hồ Chí Minh to war invalids nationwide. He sent a silk shirt, a month’s salary and a meal of the staff in the Presidential Palace. Every year on this occasion, He also had letters and gifts to send to the war invalids and families of martyrs.
From July 1955, War Invalids Day was changed to War Invalids and Martyrs Day to recognize the great sacrifices of compatriots and soldiers nationwide for the glorious victory of the whole nation. After the liberation of the South and the reunification of the Fatherland, according to Directive No. 223/CT-TW dated July 8, 1975 of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee, from 1975, July 27 every year officially became the National Day of War Invalids and Martyrs.
Every year, July 27 is an occasion to show our nation’s principle of “Drink water, remember the source”, reminding each of us of patriotic traditions, national pride, responsibility to live and work, to study, building and defending the Fatherland, worthy of the great sacrifices of the generations of our forefathers.
