Lê Phổ, “A mother and her child in the garden”
Oil on silk mounted on cardboard, signed lower right
92,5 × 73 cm (lot 28)
Considered one of the leading figures in Vietnamese modern fine arts, Lê Phổ was born in 1907 in Hà Tây province into a family of respected mandarins, whose father was the minister of Tonkin.
Showing a penchant for painting and drawing, he attended the first class of the Indochina Fine Arts School in 1925. He quickly caught the attention of the school’s director and founder, Victor Tardieu, and he maintained a close relationship throughout life. Lê Phổ perfectly absorbed the teachings of his teachers.
The school promotes the value of Vietnamese artistic traditions such as painting on silk or lacquer, while also inspiring this new generation of artists about the history and techniques of Western art. Indeed, one can easily see the influence of the Italian Primitifs or the Impressionists in Lê Phổ’s works.
