We are coming to the end of 2023, the last few auctions of Vietnamese art have almost ended. Closing out a relatively quiet year, although there were also new million-dollar records.
Works of nearly a hundred year ago by French artists and teachers who led the way and opened the door for Vietnamese painting appear, most of them have moderate commercial value but there are historical value, academic artistic value.
Bonhams’ auction on Vietnamese Fine Arts yesterday also sold 24/33 lots. The value of the entire auction is not high because they are all works of moderate level. What is worth mentioning is that Bonhams has made a breakthrough in thinking when recently they have changed direction, choosing new faces of Vietnamese artists to represent the next to the famous names, whose commercial value is already high, difficult to break through.
Gradual walking makes a way. Each auction house will choose for itself an appropriate direction. With a densely populated market like Việt Nam, where the number of people interested in art is not many because the taste does not seem to keep up with economic growth, Bonhams has opportunities when introducing diversity in names, painting style and price.
Viet Art View introduces some beautiful paintings. The works created by artist Trần Lưu Hậu with his liberal and colorful style still inspire and delight. Paintings by artist Lê Văn Xương use gouache with simple themes but achieve stable prices compared to previous years; sold both paintings in the auction.
