LƯƠNG XUÂN NHỊ (1914-2006). The harvest. Oil. 46×65cm.
At first glance, the painting seems quite rustic, even a bit simple, without much meticulous use of technique and labor time. But when evaluating a work, we often see and feel the message it conveys, without worrying about thick or thin colors, long or quick painting, detailed or some highlights for shaping.
What do we see in this painting Harvest? Is it harvest time or does it look like planting. The gentle, fresh yellow spreads across the painting’s surface like a signal that a vast field is in full harvest, prosperty and happiness.
Harvest is not simply a landscape painting. It reflects the prosperity, abundance of Vietnamese villages. After a bumper harvest, there are happy faces, the chirping of children and kitchens fragrant with the smell of new rice.
Lương Xuân Nhị’s painting is very suitable for subjects like this. No matter what he creates, the atmosphere and light on his paintings are clear, gentle and extremely peaceful.
And that is his success in turning the arduous farm work into a light, poetic one.
Viewers don’t only see farmers harvesting rice in the fields, they also looked at the rows of green trees in the distance, at the vastness of the fields. Thinking about the image of heavy rice flowers, seeing the future filled with faith, love and hope of the country.
That is the true value and meaning of an artwork!
The painting is included in ‘Asian painters, major works’ auction at Aguttes on September 26, 2023.
