Online auction, April 8, 2024 at Bonhams Hong Kong
There are 30 lots, of which 24 lots are works by Vietnamese artists, it shows the attraction and attention of the art market to Vietnamese art.
According to experts from Bonhams, currently the Vietnamese works of art being commissioned at Bonhams are quite diverse. Among them, paintings by the next generation of artists from the Indochina Fine Arts College with names such as Trần Lưu Hậu and Nguyễn Trung are attracting attention and interest from buyers.

Plum Blossom, lacquer painting by Alix Aymé has an estimated price of 630 to 940 million VND. This is a beautiful painting, worth collecting. The entire surface of the painting is covered with a splendid layer of gold. The special feature, creating a feeling of the softness of nature comes from the spreading branches of plum with tiny plum blossoms. The white color of plum blossoms was made of eggshells attached to the surface of the painting instead of white colour. The tiny blossom petals were meticulously shaped by Alix, taking a long time to perfect with skillful techniques and meticulous care.

Still life, Cát Bà beach, Abstract by Trần Lưu Hậu have an estimated price of 94 million to 280 million VND. These three works all create a feeling of energy through color, combination of strokes and liberal, free brushwork – characteristics of paintings created by Trần Lưu Hậu. If these three works are hammered at a reasonable estimated price, plus a 30% auction fee, it will be a great deal for the buyer. Because in the domestic market, Trần Lưu Hậu’s paintings are being traded at higher numbers.

Mango Garden, Remniscence of Dream, Lotus Offering, Golden Buddhas III, The Golden Temple by Nguyễn Trung with flexible estimated prices from 63 million to 560 million, are still the pleasant number. Among these 5 works, Lotus Offering, a familiar motif of Nguyễn Trung with the image of a young woman wearing a yellow veil with flowers and leaves, has an estimated price of 310 million to 560 million, which is reasonable. Looking at Lotus Offering we see an interesting mix of nations and schools in a theme full of Eastern religious ideas. The yellow scarf with subtle string patterns echoes the Lý Trần period in the Paul Gauguin style of Post-Impressionism. The lotus flower symbolizes religion – Buddhism. Mangosteen fruit refers to regional characteristics – the South. The young woman is wearing traditional Vietnamese white áo dài. The shaping of the hand with fingers open inspired by the shape of Guanyin Buddha in traditional Northern folk sculpture. Fish Becoming Dragon, lacquer on paper by Nguyễn Gia Trí, certified by Đức Minh Gallery and Mr. Nguyễn Gia Tuệ, son of the famous artist Nguyễn Gia Trí, it is considered an authentic document on the authenticity of the work. The painting is estimated at a price ranging from 510 million to 790 million. This is a collectible price because of the expensiveness of his other works. Like some artists with natural talent, Nguyễn Gia Trí has diverse creative abilities. His work is classical and academic realism to modern schools such as abstraction. And with every school he left behind focus works. In the Vietnamese art market, to own a work by Nguyễn Gia Trí, buyers often have to spend a large amount of money. The estimated price of 1.9 billion to 2.5 billion VND with Văn Bình’s name and the size of the work is temporarily acceptable even though this painting, according to Viet Art View, currently has three versions. The most famous version is currently in the collection of Việt Nam Fine Arts Museum. The second version, the same size as this auction version, is currently in a private collection in Hà Nội.
