Vu Cao Dam loved the theme of couples. He had several series on this theme. For example: Jade ring, Conversation, Returning man, Hand… “Conversation” is one of the very beautiful and typical paintings by Vu Cao Dam on the theme of conversation. The image of a man and woman in familiar Vietnamese costumes with a horse in the distance… delicately describes the long distance the young man has gone through.
Since moving to Vence, and starting to work in the Impressionist style, his characters sometimes appear in very special architectural contexts. They are a mix of styles between his hometown, Vietnam, and where he lived – Vence. They seem to had been created in a dreamy subconscious between the past and present. The roof structure is in the style of a “Vietnamese village communal house roof”, but the window where the young woman is standing seems to be very similar to the architecture of houses overlooking the French coast. The white color of the walls is also typical of European architecture. It could be seen that in his mind he never lost the nostalgia for his homeland. He only had a few paintings of the landscape of Vence, all of his remaining works are about Vietnam, the beloved homeland.
