On Thursday, December 7, 2023, the lacquer painting ‘Two ladies wearing áo dài’ by artist Nguyễn Khang will be auctioned in France.

This is a very beautiful, precious and rare painting by artist Nguyễn Khang.

Name of the artwork: Two ladies wearing áo dài
Date: 1943
Medium: Lacquer
Dimensions: 58×49 cm
Estimate: 8.000 – 10.000 EUR

It’s been a long time that we see a little, beautiful lacquer painting of artist Nguyễn Khang like this appear on the auction floor.

Mr Nguyễn Thái Dũng – artist Nguyễn Khang’s son was very happy and touched when he saw an authentic work of his father. He shared: “This painting is full of the style of him (Nguyễn Khang). The contours of the áo dài are processed carefully and delicately. The traditional lacquer color scheme is black, vermilion, silver, and gold on a black background.”

According to information from the auction house, ‘Two ladies wearing áo dài’ was created in 1943; the same year as the major lacquer painting in his career, ‘Fishing on a moonlit night’ was created. Therefore, we will easily see similarities in Nguyễn Khang’s shaping, color scheme and paint making techniques.

With a starting price of 8-10k EUR, this is certainly a fierce race for collectors. Viet Art View cannot be sure of the peak price when the hammer hits, but boldly predict that this beautiful little painting will at least reach the mark of 50k EUR or more.

And let’s wait until the auction day, Viet Art View will inform you of the result.

P/S: Mr Nguyễn Thái Dũng also asked Viet Art View to correct information about his father. Because the auction house wrote the year when artist Nguyễn Khang passed away incorrectly.
