Since 1954, after the Liberation of the Capital, the movement of painting with the theme of the war against the US and building Socialism was popularized throughout the country according to the Government’s guidelines. The work “Reclamation” was created by artist Lương Xuân Nhị during his field trips to some localities and farms in the North. He was accompanied by other artists. The painting was exhibited around the second half of the 1960s. Breaking away from the theme of gentle, elegant young women and beautiful landscapes in a romantic style, he built the character’s image in the beauty of labor in the fields, factories, and construction sites. The beautiful homeland has been transformed in the development stages of the country. The image of fertile, lush brown soil reclaimed; trees, agricultural fruits as the main theme… has created a new era of Lương Xuân Nhị’s painting style that is strong and direct, contributing to the history of the nation.

Artist Lương Xuân Nhị is famous for his works on silk and oil depicting peaceful landscapes and flowers. He graduated from Indochina Fine Arts Colllege in 1937, and was one of the artists who introduced oil painting to Việt Nam. He is known for his soft brushstrokes and harmonious style, often inspired by Vietnamese nature. With balanced compositions and a delicate color palette, he expressed his deep admiration for the splendor and grandeur, the primitive beauty of Vietnamese nature. As a true artist who combines Western techniques with Vietnamese painting traditions, he affirmed: “I learned from Europe how to paint, how to express shapes, light and color according to the reality before my eyes, these things have been ingrained in my mind throughout my studies (at Indochina Fine Arts College). Eastern art has omitted details, only expressing shapes from the subjective perspective of the artist, capturing the spirit of the landscape and people.”
